Stress Management Competencies Research background
Below you can download reports on all 4 phases of the stress management competencies research carried by Occupational Psychologist, Emma Donaldson-Fielder and her colleagues at Goldsmiths, University of London and Affinity Health at Work. The 4-year research programme was sponsored by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), CIPD and Investors in People (IIP).
  • Phase 1 resulted in an emergent 'Management competencies for preventing and reducing stress at work' with 19 competencies
  • Phase 2 refined this to a Management Competency Framework consisting of 4 competencies and 12 sub-competencies and a 66-item Stress Management Competencies Indicator Tool was developed to measure the relevant competencies. (Please scroll down this page if you want to download this free tool)
  • Phase 3 developed and tested a management development intervention for Line Managers, Preventing Stress: Promoting Positive Manager Behaviour. Both quantitative and qualitative evidence was gathered that demonstrated the efficacy of this approach. Train-the-trainer courses are now being organised for practitioners who wish to use the intervention with clients and for organizations who wish to use this approach in-house.
  • Phase 4 was a structured follow-up to capture the different approaches taken by organizations and produce 10 longitudinal case studies. 10 organizations took part, including large public and private sector organizations.
The reports are very readable and aimed at more general audience than many academic papers. They are recommended reading if you or your colleagues require information on the research evidence that led to the development of the Competency Framework, tools and management development intervention. For more information please check out the Roadshow events we are running to raise awareness of these developments.

Preventing Stress in Organizations: How do Develop Positive Managers (Book)
Psychologist, Emma-Donaldson-Feilder led the 4-year research programme (HSE, CIPD and IIP) into Management Competencies for Preventing and Reducing Stress. This excellent book by Emma and her colleagues describes their research, and the framework and tools that were developed as a result.  But more importantly, the book clearly and simply describes how you can help managers make positive changes that prevent and reduce stress and enhance well-being at work.
